Variations on Laundry
‘Variations on Laundry, June 7th & June 11th’ (2010) Installation view of work made during the summer of 2010 while at a residency at Fundación Botín in Spain at the time of FIFA World Cup finales. While staying as a guest-artist in Santander, a line of laundry was hung from the balcony of my studio, the adjacent space between domestic and public space. The colour of the clothing that were hung corresponded with the flags of the countries playing against Spain during the finales. Continuing my ongoing work with the contested sight of laundry, this work, besides looking unattractive in relation to the neighborhood’s very wealthy aesthetics of privacy, created a great deal of controversy due to the heightened patriotism at the time of the finales.
